UNC Health has unveiled plans to build a 92-bed acute-care hospital on a 22-acre parcel located at the Westgate Shopping Center. According to a site map released by the health system, the proposed facility would be situated within the existing shopping center's footprint, marking a significant expansion of medical services in the area.
The hospital is designed to provide comprehensive inpatient care, including emergency services, surgical suites, and diagnostic imaging. UNC Health officials say the project aims to address growing demand for hospital beds in the region, particularly as the local population continues to increase. The Westgate location was chosen for its accessibility and proximity to major roadways, making it convenient for patients and staff.
The proposal is still in its early stages and requires approval from state regulators, including a certificate of need review. If greenlit, construction could begin within the next few years. Community members have expressed mixed reactions, with some welcoming the added healthcare access while others raise concerns about traffic and the loss of retail space. UNC Health has not yet released a timeline for the project's next steps.
