Health checkpoints and careful monitoring are now central to the daily routine at Virunga National Park in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The goal is twofold: keep the current Ebola outbreak from spreading further among local communities, and shield the park's critically endangered mountain gorillas from a virus that could devastate their population.

Rangers and health workers have set up screening stations at key entry points. Anyone passing through, whether a resident, a trader, or a visitor, gets their temperature checked and is asked about any possible symptoms. Handwashing stations with chlorinated water are also in place. These measures are not just about human safety. Gorillas share about 98 percent of their DNA with people, which means they can catch the same respiratory and viral diseases. An outbreak among the roughly 1,000 mountain gorillas that live in the Virunga massif could be catastrophic, as the species has only recently recovered from near extinction.

The park's approach combines public health protocols with wildlife conservation. Teams are tracking gorilla family movements and observing them for any signs of illness, such as coughing or lethargy. Sick animals are hard to isolate in the wild, so prevention is the main line of defense. Local communities are also being educated on how to avoid contact between people and gorillas, especially when someone feels unwell. The park has dealt with Ebola scares before, but this time the response is more coordinated, with rapid response teams on standby and clear communication channels between health authorities and conservation staff. The situation remains tense, but so far no gorilla has shown symptoms, and the checkpoints are working to keep it that way.
