San Diego County health officials warn of botulism tied to Nara baby formula

San Diego County public health officials issued an urgent warning on Wednesday, urging parents and caregivers to immediately discard or return any containers of Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula. The product has been connected to a multi-state outbreak of infant botulism, a rare but serious illness that can cause muscle weakness and breathing difficulties in babies.

The warning comes after several cases of infant botulism were reported across different states, with laboratory tests linking the infections to the Nara brand formula. Health authorities are advising families to check their supplies and stop using the product right away. Symptoms of infant botulism include constipation, poor feeding, a weak cry, and a loss of head control. In severe cases, the illness can lead to paralysis and respiratory failure.

Officials are working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the source of the contamination. While the exact number of affected infants has not been released, the outbreak has prompted a coordinated response to prevent further cases. Parents who have used the formula and notice any symptoms in their child are urged to seek medical attention immediately. The formula can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
