Craig Ferguson, a devoted Scottish soccer fan, has embarked on an epic journey across the United States. He is walking 3,000 miles while wearing a traditional kilt, all to raise money and awareness for men's mental health. Ferguson's trek began in Seattle, Washington, and will end in Boston, Massachusetts, a city with deep ties to his favorite soccer team, Celtic FC.
The idea for the walk came from Ferguson's own struggles with mental health. He wanted to do something dramatic to break the stigma around men talking about their feelings. "I've been there, in that dark place," Ferguson said in a recent interview. "I want men to know it's okay to ask for help." He is walking roughly 20 miles per day, often through rain, heat, and rough terrain. The kilt, he jokes, adds an extra challenge, especially when the wind picks up.
Along the way, Ferguson has been stopping at local pubs and community centers to share his story and collect donations. His goal is to raise funds for organizations that provide counseling and support for men facing depression and anxiety. As of this week, he has covered over 1,500 miles and hopes to reach Boston by late autumn. Supporters have been tracking his progress on social media, with many joining him for short stretches of the walk. Ferguson says the kindness of strangers has kept him going. "Every handshake, every donation, every person who says 'I get it' -- that's why I'm doing this," he said.
