The measles outbreak in Pennsylvania has now grown to more than 70 confirmed cases, with health authorities working to contain what has become the state's largest cluster of the virus in recent years. The outbreak began in late April in the region around Lebanon and Lancaster counties, and cases have since spread across six counties.
State health leaders said they are committed to getting the situation under control, though they acknowledge the virus is highly contagious and difficult to stop once it takes hold in unvaccinated communities. Most of the cases involve children and adults who were not immunized, according to officials.
Measles can cause serious complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis, and is especially dangerous for infants and people with weakened immune systems. The virus spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and it can linger in a room for up to two hours after that person has left.
Health departments have been conducting contact tracing and setting up vaccination clinics in affected areas. Officials urge anyone who has not received the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine to do so, as it remains the most effective way to prevent infection. The outbreak is a reminder of how quickly a preventable disease can return when vaccination rates fall below the threshold needed for herd immunity.
