The Democratic Republic of Congo's current Ebola epidemic has now claimed at least 2,000 lives among confirmed cases, making it the most rapidly expanding outbreak of the virus on record. Health officials confirmed the grim milestone on Friday, noting that the disease continues to spread in the country's eastern provinces despite the availability of an effective vaccine and experimental treatments.

The outbreak, which began in August 2018, has already become the second deadliest in history, trailing only the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people. But the speed of transmission in this current wave is unprecedented.
