Feb. 14—SANTA FE — A significant initiative aimed at reforming New Mexico's mental health and substance abuse treatment system has gained traction, as the Senate has approved a set of bills that will now move to the state House. On Friday, the Senate voted in favor of three key pieces of legislation designed to create a new behavioral health trust fund and mandate the development of regional strategies for crisis triage units and mobile response teams.
The approved bills, known as Senate Bills 1, 2, and 3, reflect a collaborative effort between lawmakers from both parties, highlighting a growing recognition of the urgent need for improved mental health services across the state. This legislative package is expected to enhance access to care and provide critical resources for individuals facing mental health challenges and substance abuse issues.
As the bills progress to the House, advocates are hopeful that this momentum will continue, paving the way for a more robust support system for those in need of behavioral health services in New Mexico.
