Maryland health officials are monitoring an uptick in confirmed and suspected mumps cases across the state in the early weeks of the year. While the number of cases is higher than typically seen in such a short period, authorities emphasize that the overall risk to the general public remains low.
Mumps is a contagious viral infection best known for causing puffy cheeks and a swollen jaw due to swelling of the salivary glands. Symptoms can also include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets from activities like coughing, sneezing, or sharing cups and utensils.
Health officials are urging vigilance, recommending that residents ensure they are up-to-date on the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which provides strong protection. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are approximately 88% effective at preventing mumps. Individuals experiencing symptoms should contact their healthcare provider, stay home from work or school, and avoid close contact with others to prevent further spread. The department continues to investigate the cases and is working with healthcare providers to identify any potential links.
