How Israel is destroying healthcare infrastructure in southern Lebanon

A mounting health crisis is unfolding in southern Lebanon as sustained military actions systematically dismantle the region's medical infrastructure. Hospitals, medical centres, and ambulances have repeatedly come under fire, severely compromising the ability to provide critical care to a population caught in the crossfire.

These attacks have directly targeted the backbone of the healthcare system. Multiple facilities have been rendered completely non-operational due to structural damage, while others operate under severe strain with limited supplies and personnel. The targeting of healthcare workers, including paramedics, has created an atmosphere of fear and further depleted an already stretched workforce.

The destruction of medical services is a primary driver of widespread displacement. Civilians, fearing they will have no access to treatment for injuries or chronic conditions, are being forced to flee their homes. This exodus places immense pressure on remaining hospitals in the north, which are now overwhelmed.

The collapse of local healthcare creates a vicious cycle: injuries from ongoing hostilities cannot be adequately treated, public health threats like disease outbreaks loom larger without proper medical oversight, and vulnerable groups including the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses face the gravest risks. The international medical community has raised alarms, stating the destruction of healthcare violates international norms and will have long-term humanitarian consequences for the people of southern Lebanon.
