Health Advisory issued for Haviland Pond in Ludlow due to harmful algae bloom

A public health advisory has been issued for Haviland Pond in Ludlow, warning residents to avoid all contact with the water due to a harmful blue-green algae bloom. The advisory, announced by local health officials, prohibits swimming, wading, and other recreational activities that could lead to exposure.

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that are dangerous to both humans and pets. Symptoms of exposure include skin irritation, nausea, and in severe cases, liver damage or neurological effects. Officials urge pet owners to keep dogs out of the water, as animals are especially vulnerable to ingesting the toxins while drinking or grooming.

The bloom was detected during routine water quality monitoring. Authorities advise that the advisory will remain in effect until water samples show toxin levels have dropped to safe limits. Residents near the pond should also avoid using the water for drinking or cooking, even if treated, as standard boiling does not remove the toxins.

The town is posting warning signs around the shoreline and will continue to test the water regularly. Anyone who comes into contact with the water is advised to rinse off immediately with clean water and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
