UF Health researchers uncover biological clues behind childhood scoliosis

A new study from UF Health researchers has identified distinct patterns of gene activity in spinal tissue that may explain why some children develop scoliosis. The condition, which causes an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine, affects millions of children worldwide, yet its underlying causes have remained largely mysterious.

The research team analyzed tissue samples from the spines of children undergoing surgery for scoliosis. They compared these samples to healthy spinal tissue and found significant differences in how certain genes were expressed. Specifically, genes involved in bone growth, cartilage development, and connective tissue maintenance showed altered activity levels in the scoliosis patients.

"This gives us a biological roadmap we didn't have before," said one of the lead researchers. "We are not just looking at a structural problem anymore. We are seeing molecular signals that may be driving the curve from the very beginning."

The findings suggest that scoliosis may not be caused by a single genetic mutation but rather by a complex interplay of multiple genes and environmental factors. The researchers hope these clues will eventually lead to earlier detection methods and targeted treatments that could prevent the need for bracing or surgery.

Currently, scoliosis is typically diagnosed during routine school screenings or after a parent notices a child's uneven shoulders or hips. Treatment often involves wearing a back brace for years or undergoing spinal fusion surgery to straighten the curve. The UF Health study opens the door to a future where doctors might identify at-risk children before the curve becomes severe.

The team plans to expand the study to include larger patient groups and explore whether these gene activity patterns are present in blood samples, which would make screening much simpler. While a cure remains years away, this research marks a significant step toward understanding a condition that has puzzled doctors for generations.
