French bulldogs have officially become the most popular dog breed in the United States, according to recent rankings. The compact, bat-eared dogs have surged past long-time favorites like Labrador retrievers and golden retrievers, winning over owners with their small size, low exercise needs, and distinctive wrinkled faces. But as their popularity climbs, veterinarians are warning that the breed's unique physical traits come with serious health risks.
The French bulldog's flat face and compressed airway structure, a trait known as brachycephaly, can lead to severe breathing difficulties. Many of these dogs suffer from a condition called brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, which can cause chronic panting, overheating, and even collapse after mild exertion. Veterinary experts say the breed is also prone to spinal issues, skin infections in their deep facial folds, and eye problems. Because of their large heads and narrow hips, many French bulldogs cannot give birth naturally and require cesarean sections.
Animal welfare advocates argue that breeding dogs for extreme physical features prioritizes appearance over health. Some countries have already moved to restrict or ban the breeding of flat-faced dogs. While French bulldog owners often praise their loyal and playful temperament, vets urge potential buyers to research the breed's medical needs and consider the high cost of veterinary care. The breed's popularity boom has also led to a rise in irresponsible breeding, which can worsen inherited health problems. For anyone considering a French bulldog, experts recommend working with a responsible breeder who tests for common genetic conditions.
