Cape Fear Valley Health Lays Off 138 People as It Cuts 200 Jobs

Cape Fear Valley Health Lays Off 138 People as It Cuts 200 Jobs

Cape Fear Valley Health has eliminated 200 positions, including 138 layoffs, as the healthcare system struggles with rising costs and federal funding reductions. The North Carolina-based network announced the cuts on Wednesday, saying that previous cost-saving measures were no longer enough to keep the organization financially stable.

In a statement, the health system pointed to several factors behind the decision. It cited lower reimbursement rates from government programs like Medicare and Medicaid, along with higher expenses for supplies, drugs, and labor. Officials said the layoffs affect both clinical and non-clinical roles across the system, though patient care will not be compromised.

The 138 laid-off employees will receive severance packages and help finding new jobs, according to the health system. The remaining 62 positions were already vacant and will not be filled. Cape Fear Valley Health employs roughly 8,000 people across its hospitals and clinics in southeastern North Carolina.

This is not the first round of cuts for the system. It previously reduced management roles and trimmed other spending. But leaders said those efforts fell short against the financial pressure created by what they called an unstable funding environment. The health system also noted that it is not alone. Many hospitals across the country are making similar moves as they face the same headwinds.

Cape Fear Valley Health operates several facilities, including Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. The system serves a large rural and military-affiliated population. Officials said they will continue to look for ways to cut costs without hurting the quality of care.
