Poor genetic health threatens many species

A growing body of research shows that many animal species are facing a hidden threat: poor genetic health. Unlike immediate dangers like habitat loss or poaching, this issue works slowly, weakening populations from the inside. Four experts recently came together to explain what genetic health actually means and why it is a critical factor in conservation efforts.

Genetic health refers to the variety of genes within a population. When a species has low genetic diversity, it becomes more vulnerable to disease, less able to adapt to changing environments, and more likely to suffer from inbreeding. This can lead to lower birth rates, weaker immune systems, and physical deformities. For small or isolated populations, the problem becomes a vicious cycle.

Take the cheetah, for example. The entire species is so genetically similar that a single disease could wipe out a large portion of them. Similarly, the vaquita porpoise, with fewer than ten individuals left, has almost no genetic variation left to work with. Even species that seem stable on the surface may be in trouble.

The experts stress that genetic health should be a routine part of conservation planning. This means not just counting animals, but also tracking their DNA. It means creating wildlife corridors so populations can mix, and sometimes even moving animals between groups to introduce new genes. Without these steps, we might save a species on paper, but lose it in practice.

The message is clear: protecting wildlife is not just about numbers. It is about keeping the genetic toolbox full. If we ignore this, many species will survive in name only, unable to thrive or evolve. The time to act is now, before the diversity that keeps life resilient is gone for good.
