Most people have lied to their doctor at least once. A survey from 2022 found that nearly 80 percent of patients admitted to withholding information during medical visits. Embarrassment, fear of judgment, or simply forgetting often get in the way. But some secrets can have serious consequences for your health.
One of the most common things patients hide is how much alcohol they actually drink. Underreporting alcohol use can lead doctors to miss liver damage, high blood pressure, or interactions with medications. If you have three drinks a night but say you have one, your doctor might prescribe a medication that reacts badly with alcohol.
Another secret people keep involves supplements and herbal remedies. Many assume these are harmless because they are natural. But St. John's Wort can make birth control pills less effective. High doses of vitamin E can thin your blood. Your doctor needs the full picture to avoid dangerous interactions.
Sexual history is another area where patients often hold back. Whether it is number of partners, unprotected sex, or symptoms like discharge or sores, leaving this out can delay diagnosis of infections or even HIV. Early treatment makes a huge difference.
Patients also hide mental health struggles. Depression, anxiety, or thoughts of self-harm often go unmentioned because of stigma. But these conditions are treatable, and your doctor can connect you with resources. Keeping quiet only prolongs suffering.
Finally, people sometimes lie about how often they take their medication. If you skip doses but claim to be compliant, your doctor may increase the dose or add another drug, thinking the current one is not working. That can lead to side effects or overdosing.
Your doctor is not there to judge you. They need accurate information to help you stay healthy. The more honest you are, the better care you will get.
