West Nile virus detected in southern state as health officials warn residents about mosquitoes

Health officials in Tennessee confirmed the first detection of West Nile virus in Nashville for the 2026 season, urging residents to take immediate precautions against mosquito bites. The Metro Public Health Department announced that a routine mosquito trap collected in the city tested positive for the virus, marking the first such finding this year.

While no human cases have been reported so far, officials warn that the presence of the virus in the local mosquito population signals a heightened risk for transmission. West Nile virus can cause serious neurological illness in some people, particularly those over 60 or with weakened immune systems. Common symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue.

"The best defense is prevention," said a department spokesperson. Residents are advised to eliminate all sources of standing water around homes, including clogged gutters, flower pots, and birdbaths, where mosquitoes breed. The health department also recommends using EPA-approved insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when spending time outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

wearing long sleeves and pants can reduce exposed skin. Officials will continue monitoring mosquito traps throughout the summer and may conduct targeted spraying in affected areas. The public is encouraged to report dead birds or standing water concerns to local authorities.
