VCU Health has officially broken ground on a new $90 million outpatient cardiac center located adjacent to the Diamond District. The two-story facility is designed to expand access to specialized heart care, with an initial build-out covering 93,000 square feet. The remaining square footage will be left as shell space, intended for future expansion as patient needs evolve.
The center aims to consolidate outpatient cardiology services, offering everything from diagnostics to follow-up care in one location. By situating the facility near the Diamond District, VCU Health hopes to improve convenience for patients traveling from across the region. The project reflects a broader push to modernize cardiac care infrastructure without requiring patients to visit the main hospital campus for every appointment.
Officials say the shell space provides flexibility to adapt to emerging medical technologies or shifts in treatment volumes. While no specific timeline has been set for filling that space, the design allows for rapid expansion when demand justifies it. Construction is expected to take roughly two years, with the center opening its doors in phases. The investment underscores VCU Health's commitment to addressing cardiovascular disease, which remains a leading cause of death in the state.
