Dr. William "Bill" Foege, a titan of global public health whose strategic genius was instrumental in eradicating smallpox, has passed away at the age of 89. His death marks the loss of a compassionate physician and an epidemiological visionary whose work saved tens of millions of lives.
Foege’s legacy is forever tied to the defeat of one of humanity’s deadliest scourges. In the 1960s and 70s, he pioneered the "surveillance and containment" strategy in Nigeria, a focused approach that isolated outbreaks instead of attempting mass, indiscriminate vaccination. This method became the blueprint for the worldwide eradication campaign, declared a success in 1980.
Beyond smallpox, Foege’s leadership shaped modern public health. He served as director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, co-founded the Task Force for Global Health, and was a key advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Colleagues remember him not only for his intellect but for his profound moral compass and empathy.
In later years, friends noted his deep frustration and anger over the rise of the anti-vaccination movement. Having witnessed the horrors of preventable disease firsthand, he was disheartened by the misinformation undermining the very tools he helped perfect. As one close friend reflected, "I wish we could have spared him from seeing that." His life’s work stands as an enduring testament to the power of science, strategy, and global cooperation for the common good.
