New York state's Health Commissioner shares ways to stay safe during this week's heat

Out of all the dangerous weather events which can claim a life, nothing is more deadly than heat. Globally, extreme heat is the number one weather-related killer, and with temperatures set to soar across New York state this week, health officials are urging residents to take the threat seriously.

New York State's Health Commissioner has released a set of practical guidelines to help people stay safe as the mercury climbs. The most critical advice is simple: stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine, as they can contribute to dehydration.

Officials also stress the importance of finding air conditioning. If your home does not have it, spend time in public cooling centers, libraries, or shopping malls. Even a few hours in a cool environment can help your body recover from the heat. For those who must work or exercise outdoors, the recommendation is to do so during the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower.

The Commissioner specifically warned against leaving children, older adults, or pets in a parked car, even for a minute. The inside of a vehicle can quickly become a death trap, reaching deadly temperatures in a matter of minutes. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, cold skin, and a fast but weak pulse. If you or someone you know shows signs of heat stroke, such as a high body temperature, confusion, or loss of consciousness, call for emergency help immediately.
