Mercer Health’s Play Hospital Continues Tradition of Hands‑On Learning for Kindergarteners

Mercer Health's annual Play Hospital, held from April 24 to 30, welcomed nearly 800 kindergarteners for a week of hands-on exploration and imaginative learning about healthcare. For more than 30 years, this beloved program has introduced young students from Mercer County elementary schools to the world of medicine in a fun and accessible way.

Children from St. Henry, Celina, Marion Local, Coldwater, Parkway, Fort Recovery, Immaculate Conception, and Versailles Elementary stepped into the roles of doctors, nurses, and patients. They practiced taking blood pressure, listening to heartbeats, and applying bandages on stuffed animals. The event is designed to reduce fear of medical settings while sparking curiosity about health careers.

Volunteers from Mercer Health guided the students through stations that simulated real hospital experiences. Organizers say the program continues to grow each year, with teachers noting that the interactive format helps children retain what they learn far better than a classroom lesson alone. The Play Hospital remains a cornerstone of community education, blending play with practical knowledge in a way that has resonated with families for decades.
