A longtime friend and close associate of New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on federal charges for an alleged multi-million dollar health care fraud. Zhan Petrosyants, also known as Johnny, was charged alongside his twin brother in a scheme that prosecutors say involved submitting fraudulent claims for services that were never provided.
According to the indictment, Petrosyants and his brother orchestrated a years-long plot to defraud health insurance providers. The alleged scheme involved submitting claims for expensive, medically unnecessary tests and procedures that were not performed. Prosecutors detailed a complex operation designed to exploit the health care system for personal gain.
The indictment highlights the personal connection between Petrosyants and Mayor Adams, noting the two have been close associates for many years. The charges stem solely from the actions of Petrosyants and his brother, with no allegations of wrongdoing by the mayor or his administration mentioned in the federal filing.
If convicted, the defendants face significant prison sentences. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office and underscores ongoing federal efforts to combat fraud within the health care industry. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
