Oakland County health officials have confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in the water systems of two public buildings. The discovery was made during standard, proactive water testing at the North Oakland Health Center in Pontiac and the Resource and Crisis Center in Clarkston.
Authorities emphasize that this finding was part of a routine screening program and that no associated cases of Legionnaires' disease have been reported. The bacteria, which can cause a serious type of pneumonia when inhaled in water vapor, do not spread from person to person.
Immediate remedial actions have been initiated at both locations. This includes the installation of point-of-use filters on faucets and showers, along with a comprehensive disinfection protocol for the entire plumbing system. The facilities remain open and operational while these precautions are in effect.
The county's environmental health team is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the potential source and is implementing a robust water management plan. Officials assure the public that the risk to visitors and staff is currently very low due to the swift containment measures, and they will continue monitoring the situation closely until the bacteria are fully eradicated.
