Understanding ethics in health care is critical for future medical providers. Health Sciences students recently engaged in a unique learning experience that combined a memoir and personal correspondence from former NFL player and ALS patient Steve Gleason. This initiative provided students with a profound perspective on the ethical dilemmas faced by individuals dealing with terminal illnesses.
Gleason's journey through his diagnosis and the challenges that accompany it highlighted the importance of empathy, compassion, and moral decision-making in the medical field. Students were able to reflect on real-life scenarios that patients and their families encounter, fostering discussions on how to navigate these complex situations responsibly.
By examining Gleason's experiences, students gained insights into the importance of patient autonomy, quality of life, and the role of healthcare providers in supporting patients' wishes. This educational approach emphasized the need for future medical professionals to be not only skilled in their practices but also sensitive to the emotional and ethical dimensions of patient care.
