Mental health professionals emphasize that early recognition of a crisis can be a critical step toward recovery. They urge the public to look beyond the surface and understand the key indicators that someone may be struggling profoundly.
Common warning signs include a person expressing that they feel overwhelmed or persistently stating they do not feel like themselves. Significant shifts in daily patterns are major red flags; this encompasses drastic changes in sleep, whether insomnia or excessive sleeping, and noticeable alterations in behavior or mood. A person may withdraw from social contact, neglect personal hygiene, or show uncharacteristic anger or despair.
Knowing how to help is equally important. Approach the person privately and express your concern without judgment. Use "I" statements, such as "I've noticed you seem overwhelmed lately, and I'm concerned about you." Listen actively, without immediately offering solutions. Your primary role is to encourage them to connect with professional support, such as a therapist, counselor, or crisis hotline. Your calm, compassionate presence and willingness to assist in finding help can provide a vital lifeline during a period of intense difficulty.
