For many people struggling with substance use, the hardest part of recovery isn't just quitting. It is staying in treatment long enough for it to work. SouthLight, a behavioral health organization, has found that the key to retention often has nothing to do with therapy or medication. Instead, it comes down to housing, food, and a ride to the clinic.
The organization's Social Determinants of Health team focuses on these practical barriers. Case workers help patients find stable housing, apply for food assistance, and arrange transportation to appointments. Without a safe place to sleep or a way to get to a session, even the most motivated person can fall through the cracks.
One patient, for example, was repeatedly missing appointments. A case worker discovered the person was living in a car and had no way to store medication that required refrigeration. The team found temporary housing and connected the patient to a local food pantry. Once those basics were handled, the patient began showing up regularly.
SouthLight's approach reflects a broader shift in healthcare. Clinics and hospitals increasingly recognize that medical treatment alone cannot overcome poverty, homelessness, or lack of transport. By addressing these root causes, the team helps patients build a stable foundation for long-term recovery. The result is not just better attendance but a real chance at a new life.
