Healthy aging in the LGBTQIA+ community

Healthy aging in the LGBTQIA+ community

An estimated three million American adults aged 50 and older currently identify as LGBTQIA+, a number projected to climb to roughly seven million by 2030 as the nation's population grows older. While LGBTQIA+ individuals in general face higher risks for certain health issues compared to the general population, these disparities are often more pronounced among older adults. The reason lies in the unique cultural and social conditions they have navigated over their lifetimes.

Many older LGBTQIA+ adults lived through decades when their identities were criminalized, pathologized, or widely stigmatized. This history has led to higher rates of chronic stress, mental health struggles, and delayed medical care. Fear of discrimination often kept them from seeking routine checkups or being open with healthcare providers. As a result, they may face higher rates of certain cancers, heart disease, and depression.

Social isolation is another major concern. Older LGBTQIA+ individuals are less likely to have children or traditional family support systems, and many have experienced rejection from biological families. This makes building strong networks of chosen family and community connections vital for healthy aging. Access to affirming senior housing, healthcare, and long-term care services remains uneven across the country.

Addressing these challenges requires healthcare systems and aging services to provide culturally competent, inclusive care. Training staff, updating intake forms to include sexual orientation and gender identity, and creating visible support networks can help older LGBTQIA+ adults age with dignity and better health outcomes.
