A new free heart health clinic in Oxted is offering screenings for men aged 40 to 70, driven by one man's personal brush with a cardiac emergency. Jeremy Schwartz, the organizer behind the initiative, says his own heart scare motivated him to set up the service. Schwartz experienced a sudden health crisis that made him realize how quickly heart problems can develop without warning, especially in middle-aged men who often ignore early symptoms.
The clinic provides basic checks including blood pressure readings, cholesterol tests, and pulse assessments. No appointments are needed, and the service is entirely free. Schwartz hopes the clinic will catch issues before they turn into emergencies, noting that many men in this age group avoid regular checkups due to time constraints or fear of bad news. He wants to remove those barriers and make prevention accessible.
The clinic operates on a drop-in basis at a local community center. Staff are volunteers, including retired nurses and paramedics. Schwartz emphasizes that the goal is not to replace regular doctors but to offer a quick, low-pressure option for men who might otherwise skip a checkup. He recalls his own experience of feeling fine one day and facing a serious diagnosis the next. The clinic aims to change that pattern for others in the community.
