A new trial in Essex is aiming to increase the number of life-saving annual health checks for adults with learning disabilities, as experts warn that too few eligible people are receiving them. The initiative, rolling out across selected GP practices, focuses on making the process more accessible and less stressful for patients who often struggle with standard appointments.
Medical professionals have long raised concerns that adults with learning disabilities die younger than the general population, often from preventable conditions. Annual health checks are designed to catch issues like heart disease, respiratory problems, and epilepsy early, but uptake remains stubbornly low. In some areas, fewer than half of those eligible attend.
The Essex trial involves longer appointment slots, simpler language in communications, and better training for practice staff. Some surgeries are also offering home visits or video calls for patients who find the clinic environment overwhelming. The goal is to remove the barriers that stop people from coming in, whether that is anxiety, communication difficulties, or a lack of understanding about what the check involves.
If the trial proves successful, health officials hope to expand the model across the county and beyond. For now, the focus is on reaching the thousands of adults who are missing out on a check that could save their life.
