If the Supreme Court upholds President Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship, experts warn the move could create a public health disaster. The policy, which would deny automatic citizenship to children born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents, is being challenged in court. But if it stands, researchers say it could have stark consequences at the intersection of bioethics and public health.
The immediate impact would fall on hundreds of thousands of newborns each year. Without citizenship, these children would lack access to key health services. They could be denied Medicaid coverage, which pays for prenatal care and delivery for low-income families. Pediatricians fear that infants with chronic conditions or birth defects might go untreated because their parents cannot afford care or fear deportation.
Public health officials also point to a chilling effect on vaccination rates. If undocumented parents believe their child's health records could be used against them, they may skip well-child visits and immunizations. That could lead to outbreaks of preventable diseases like measles or whooping cough, endangering entire communities.
Beyond individual health, the policy would create a two-tier system of American children. Some would have full rights to healthcare and education, while others would live in legal limbo. This could deepen existing health disparities and strain emergency rooms, which would still be required to treat sick children regardless of status.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned that stripping citizenship from newborns is not just a legal question but a medical one. Without a clear path to care, the nation could see a rise in infant mortality, untreated illnesses, and a generation of children growing up sicker than their peers. The Supreme Court's decision will determine whether that scenario becomes reality.
