The head of Elanco Animal Health, Jeff Simmons, outlined the company's urgent response to a growing screwworm outbreak during a recent interview on "The Claman Countdown." Simmons described the parasitic infestation as a serious threat to livestock and wildlife, particularly in warmer regions where the flesh-eating larvae can devastate animal populations.
Simmons explained that Elanco is deploying targeted treatments and working closely with veterinary authorities to contain the spread. The company has ramped up production of specific insecticides and wound-care products designed to kill screwworm larvae and prevent reinfestation. He emphasized that early detection and rapid treatment are critical, as the flies can lay hundreds of eggs in open wounds, leading to severe tissue damage and death if left unchecked.
The CEO also highlighted the economic stakes for ranchers and farmers, who face potential losses of millions of dollars in livestock. "This is not just an animal welfare issue," Simmons said. "It is a food supply and economic issue that requires a coordinated effort across borders." He noted that Elanco is sharing data and best practices with agricultural agencies to improve surveillance and quarantine measures.
While the outbreak remains contained in certain areas, Simmons warned that climate conditions could accelerate its spread. He called for continued vigilance and investment in animal health infrastructure to prevent a larger crisis. The interview underscored the private sector's role in addressing emerging zoonotic and parasitic threats before they spiral out of control.
