District of Columbia health officials have issued a public warning following potential measles exposures at several high-traffic locations. The alert comes as investigators track confirmed cases of the highly contagious virus. Individuals infected with measles visited multiple sites while contagious, potentially exposing others.
The locations include two major hospitals, Dulles International Airport, and a busy Metro station. Officials specifically noted exposures at the International Arrivals area of Dulles airport's main terminal and the Red Line platform of the Fort Totten Metro station. Specific dates and times have been released by health authorities for these locations.
Measles is a serious airborne disease that spreads easily through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms typically begin with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery red eyes, followed by a distinctive rash a few days later. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left an area.
Health officials are urging anyone who was at the identified locations during the specified times to review their vaccination status. Individuals who are unvaccinated or unsure of their immunity should monitor themselves for symptoms and contact a healthcare provider immediately if they become ill, calling ahead before visiting any medical facility. Vaccination remains the most effective protection against measles.
