Twenty-four out of Colorado's nearly 180 school districts have earned special recognition for asthma preparation and education. Cherry Creek and Denver Public Schools are among those honored for having strong policies and training in place to manage the chronic lung condition, which is the leading cause of health-related school absences across the state.
The recognition comes from a statewide program that evaluates how well schools are equipped to handle asthma emergencies and support students with the condition. To qualify, districts must prove that they have stock albuterol available, train staff on inhaler use, and maintain clear action plans for students who experience attacks during the school day.
Health officials say the effort is critical. Asthma affects roughly one in 12 children in Colorado, and attacks can escalate quickly if not treated immediately. Without proper preparation, a student might wait for a parent or an ambulance, losing valuable class time or facing a serious health crisis.
The honored districts have also focused on education. Teachers and nurses receive training on recognizing early warning signs, such as coughing or shortness of breath, and on how to administer rescue medication. Some schools have even integrated asthma awareness into health classes, teaching students about triggers like pollen, mold, and exercise.
Advocates hope the recognition encourages more districts to apply. They point out that while 24 districts have met the standards, many others still lack comprehensive asthma plans. With fall allergies and winter cold season approaching, the push for preparedness is expected to continue.
